Rockford to build a 9/11 Emergency Responders Memorial

A local group launched a $911,001 fundraising campaign Friday to build a 9/11 Emergency Responders Memorial downtown that would feature two steel beams from the World Trade Center.

Plans for the memorial, which will be located near the county’s Criminal Justice Center on West State Street, were unveiled during a news conference at Memorial Hall.

Will Pederson, a lieutenant with the Rockford Fire Department and chairman of the fundraising committee, said the memorial will serve as a reminder of the events on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as be a place to honor Winnebago County first responders.

Pederson mentioned the 411 emergency responders who were killed while making rescue attempts after the towers were toppled by terrorist attacks.

“This type of selfless courage can bee seen within our own local firefighters, police officers and emergency medical workers every day,” Pederson said.
