Marshall, Minn., plans memorial to honor 9/11 heroes

Plans for a memorial to honor the heroes of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attack are moving ahead in Marshall, Minn.

Organizers are raising money with private donations and the City Council this week authorized $108,000 for some prep work on the memorial site, downtown along the Redwood River between Main Street and Marvin Schwan Memorial Drive, said the Marshall Independent.

Organizers plan to have a beam from the Twin Towers site and hope to have the memorial ready by the 10th anniversary of the attack later this year.

According to planners, the memorial will:

"... celebrate our nation’s capacity to survive and overcome adversity and at the same time symbolize the renewal and resolve of a nation which came together that fateful day. The 911 Memorial will be the focus and a gathering place for our revitalized downtown and will honor the public safety personnel who sacrificed their lives in an effort to save others."
