9/11 Museum Taking Shape Months Before Anniversary

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Executives overseeing the 9/11 Memorial say the museum is taking shape months before the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

LISTEN: WCBS 880′s Rich Lamb reports

Port Authority Executive Director Chris Ward calls the memorial the sacred heart of the new World Trade Center where 1,200 tons of structural steel have already been put in place ahead of schedule for a massive glass and steel pavilion.

In the atrium, two 70-foot tridents from the old towers will identify the gateway to the museum.

“They’re two large twin tridents from the original World Trade Center that we’ve already placed inside that structure,” Ward said. “It’ll be a beautiful glass building where you’ll come in, you’ll walk down an entrance ramp and that will be where you descend down into all of the museum space.”

Ward said the pavilion will be clad by the 10th anniversary and Memorial President Joe Daniel said he’s pleased with the progress.

“Steel for the beautiful entrance down into the museum is already up,” Ward said. “We didn’t even think we’d have that steel by this date.”

Mariposa committee to design 9/11 memorial for tenth anniversary of WTC attacks

Last spring Mariposa County Fire Chief Jim Wilson said he learned of the availability of artifacts recovered from the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attacks on America.

Selected pieces were designated to public safety agencies throughout the country for use in local memorials. After a lengthy application process and project evaluation, the Maricopa County Fire Department was awarded four artifacts by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Representatives of law enforcement, fire service, military and civilians met for an inaugural 9/11 Memorial Committee meeting on Jan. 21.

Participating in the kick-off meeting were Sheriff Doug Binnewies, Tom Williams of the Mariposa VFW Post, Scott Cummings from the American Legion, Lt. Karen Wilson, Captain Dan Smith, Volunteer Coordinator Hallie Wass, Wilson from County Fire and Donna Brownell and Lorie Setterberg representing civilians and the Mariposa County Arts Council. The Arts Council will design the memorial.

With the tenth anniversary later this year, the group set a goal of dedicating the Mariposa County Memorial on Sunday Sept. 11, 2011. The artifacts, four nearly identical sections of I-beams, were shipped from a JFK Airport hangar last week. No taxpayer funding will be used so a fundraising effort will launched soon, Wilson said in a news release.

The committee members said they believe the Mariposa 9/11 Memorial will evolve into a monument of regional interest attracting visitors from all over California and beyond. Wilson and other committee members said they encourage people and community service groups to get involved through financial support.

As soon as the artifacts arrive, the committee said it will meet again to begin initial design work. Any interested groups or individuals can contact Committee Chair Jim Wilson at (209) 966-4330.

FDNY Retirees of California Seek Sponsors for 10th Anniv. 9/11 Memorial on the USS Midway

The FDNY Retirees of California are actively seeking sponsors and co-hosts for next year’s 10-year anniversary 9/11 Memorial on the USS Midway.

Dear Prospective Donor,

The FDNY Retirees of California would like to make the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks a memorable one, but cannot do it without your help.

Along with the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum, we are planning on a grand event to commemorate this imporant date in history.

We are looking for corporate sponsorship to assist us in financing the dinner reception following the memorial event. In the past several years, along with modest donations in time, food, and funding we have been able to hold this reception at no cost to attendees. This year, however, we are anticipating much higher attendance due to the fact it is the 10th anniversary.

The event will take place on Sunday, September 11, 20100 on the flight deck of the historic USS Midway, which is permanently docked at the Navy Pier on gorgeous San Diego Bay (910 North Harbor Dr).

The event will consist of:

  • Presentation of the Colors by Honor Guards from San Diego County FD’s, Orange County Fire Authority, the US Marine Cops, and the US Border Patrol.
  • Star Spangled Banner
  • Reading of the Names along with the Tolling of the Bells
  • SDFD Helicopter Flyover
  • Twenty-One Gun Salute
  • Taps

A dinner reception hosted by the FDNY Retirees of California will be hosted immediately after the event. At this time the location is still being negotiated but it will either be on the USS Midway itself or at the San Diego Firehouse Museum, located in Little Italy at 1572 Columbia St, (at the intersection of Columia and Cedar Streets. One block up from India St.) Family and friends are invited to the memorial and reception.

If you or your organization (or if you have a recommendation) would like to co-sponsor or donate in some way to this historic event please contact Jack Toale at (858)451-2902 or by email at jtoale8@att.net, or Brennan Savage at (760) 634-3539 or by email at savagebdl@yahoo.com.

If you are intersted in reading names (we need at least 85) please contact us as well.

Thank you for your interest!

NEW YORK CITY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY PARADE

The Parade starts at 44th Street at 11 am and is held every March 17th, except when March 17th falls on a Sunday, it is celebrated the day before, Saturday the 16th because of religious observances.
The parade marches up Fifth Avenue past St. Patrick's Cathedral at 50th Street all the way up past the American Irish Historical Society at 83rd and the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 83rd Street to 86th Street, where the parade finishes around 4:30 - 5:00 pm

The St. Patrick's Day Parade is one of New York City's greatest traditions. On this day, everyone is Irish in the Big Apple!

The Parade marched for the first time on March 17, 1762 - fourteen Years before the Declaration of Independence was adopted and today it is the largest Parade in the World.

This annual parade has been held for the past 248 years in honor of the Patron Saint of Ireland and the Archdiocese of New York. The Parade is reviewed from the steps of Saint Patrick's Cathedral by His Eminence Cardinal Edward Eagan, Archbishop of New York in the same manner as the Archbishop of New York did in the early days of the Parade at the Old St. Patrick's Cathedral in Lower Manhattan when the Parade was held in Lower Manhattan before the new St Patrick’s was built on Fifth Avenue.

Often regarded as the most popular parade in New York City, the Parade is the largest and most famous of the many parades held in the city each year.

Beware of Fake 9/11 Coins

Just before Christmas, retired NYPD Capt. Tom DePrisco saw a TV commercial at his fiancée's house and his "blood began to boil."

The commercial was for a 10th anniversary Sept. 11 commemorative dollar coin issued by the National Collector's Mint out of Westchester. The ad said this exploitative trinket featured "the skyline of the twin towers."

But what roiled DePrisco's Brooklyn blood was the phrase "clad in a total 14 mg. 999 pure silver actually recovered from the vaults beneath the ashes of Ground Zero."

"That's just pure bull----," said DePrisco, who after 9/11 was assigned to the city Office of Emergency Management to help handle recovery efforts around Ground Zero.

Website

Please check our new website:

On September 11th, 2001, the world was changed forever. From the Firefighters, Police and EMS personnel at the World Trade Center in New York City to the personnel working at the Pentagon in Washington, DC and the passengers of United Flight 93 that went down in a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania, hundreds of everyday people instantly became our heroes and we find this ten year milestone an important time to pause and reflect on what their actions have meant to us. In what could have been our darkest hour, these everyday heroes stepped forward without a second thought to give everything to help their fellow man rise above these cowardly events.
With the tenth anniversary of the tragic events that unfolded on that day just over the horizon, we wish to honor those that gave their lives with a series of commemorative patches, pins, coins and apparel to mark this solemn anniversary. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this series of commemorative items will be donated to (to be announced) and the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation in Ottawa, Ontario. Please show your support by purchasing any of these commemorative items.
